I had thought the Helios 103 was a development of the pre-war Zeiss Sonnar design and the Jupiter 8 Sonnar clone. However I received this info from Peter Hennig:
Just a short notice on your excellent web site: As all Helios lenses, the Helios 103 1,8/53 is a variation of the Zeiss Biotar concept. As a matter of fact the Helios 103 is quite close to the actual Leica Summicron 2/50*. I enclose a drawing on the Helios 103 lens.
Best regards from Stockholm, Sweden,
Peter Hennig

*Postscript: It was the six lens Summicron introduced in 1979 that inspired the optical department at Zavod Arsenal. The result is quite good - in spite of the fact that the coating is rather simple. The lens is close to perfectly symmetrical, and thereby free from distortion. The Sonnar/Jupiter lenses have a huge distortion error, thanks to their non-symmetrical construction.
